A Place of Healing held their first support group last Thursday for those with eating disorders, disordered eating behaviors, and friends and family of those who suffer. Turnout was successful with male and female attendees of all ages and backgrounds including family members.
Support groups are a place where people can connect with others in a safe and positive environment who share similar issues.
As was pointed out during the meeting, although we all have traveled different paths of disorder and recovery, we were all able to connect and relate to each others experiences.
Because of this aspect, I feel this makes the support group one of the most important services offered by A Place of Healing.
We are very excited to offer this support group as a part of an individual’s treatment team or as a way for friends and family to learn more about the disease of eating disorders and how to support your loved one through recovery.
The groups are led by volunteer individuals who have stuggled and recovered from eating disorders, disordered eating, and/or are professionals who understand the complexity of the disease and want to help encourage recovery for others.
The leader for the week will start the group off with a discussion topic or activity and there will be time for open discussions to share current challenges, triumphs, and stories of strength and hope!
In support groups, participants can open up, realize they are not alone, heal old hurts, set new goals, learn new skills, take charge of their lives, and become leaders themselves.
Support groups will continue meeting every Thursday at 7pm at A Place of Healing. All are welcome. There is no fee to attend, however, love donations for the organization will be accepted in order to continue these services.
